The Empty Wall Paradox
Why troops still die when no heroes defend the wall, where losses actually come from, and the shield, wall, and recovery steps that protect your army.

The question#
A common piece of advice is “take your heroes off the wall so you don’t lose troops when you get hit.” Then players do it, get attacked, and still find dead soldiers in their report. Why do soldiers still die when no heroes defend the wall?
Because an empty wall is damage control, not immunity. Removing wall defenders can reduce casualties against stronger attackers — your squads don’t stand and fight a battle they can’t win — but troops in your Barracks can still die if your Sanctuary is breached. A shield is the only option that actually prevents the attack.
1. Shield first#
A shield prevents attacks on your Sanctuary. It is the most reliable way to protect your troops.
How: open Sanctuary → Shield and choose a duration. Options include 8 hours, 24 hours, 3 days, and 7 days. Pick one that covers the entire danger window — not just the next couple of hours.
Before you log off:
- Activate a shield for the full danger window.
- Check the remaining timer.
- Recall all gathering marches outside the Sanctuary. A shield protects your Sanctuary, not troops standing on a resource tile.
- Avoid opening large resource packs (unprotected resources make you a more attractive target).
- Monitor the event and war schedule so you know when attacks are likely.
2. Wall defenders#
The wall controls which of your squads defend the Sanctuary. Tap Wall → Fortifications and you’ll see each squad with a checkbox.
| Setting | What happens | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Defenders ON (checked) | Your heroes and troops defend the Sanctuary. If you’re outmatched, wounded and dead soldiers can pile up quickly. | When you can win the fight, or for event defense (e.g. Undead Siege). |
| Defenders OFF (unchecked) | Squads no longer garrison the wall. This can reduce casualties against much stronger attackers. Troops in the Barracks can still die after a breach. | When you can’t win the fight and have no shield. |
If you cannot win a defense and have no shield, consider removing wall defenders — but never describe it as zero-loss protection.
3. Where losses come from#
Even with an empty wall, your troops are still vulnerable in five ways:
- Sanctuary breach: if the enemy breaks your defenses, troops in your Barracks can still die.
- Barracks: the main source of troop losses during an attack. Keep troop counts appropriate and avoid unnecessary overproduction — more idle troops means more to lose.
- Gathering marches: troops outside your Sanctuary are always at risk. Recall them before going offline.
- Full Infirmary: once your Infirmary is full, additional wounded troops can be converted into dead troops. An empty Infirmary absorbs damage; a full one doesn’t.
- Repeated attacks: a shield expiring can lead to multiple consecutive attacks while you’re offline. Keep an eye on the timer and the event schedule.
4. After an attack#
Minimize long-term damage and recover quickly:
- Read battle reports. Check the actual casualties.
- Check your Infirmary. Heal wounded troops right away — a full Infirmary turns the next hit into permanent losses.
- Review Barracks and Rest House counts rather than relying on the battle summary alone.
- Rebuild and restore defenses when needed, and put a shield back up if the danger window isn’t over.
Restore defenders for wall events#
Some events require wall garrisons. In Undead Siege, for example, shields don’t stop the attacks and your wall defenders are what keep you alive. Restore defenders before those events and follow event instructions. Alliance leaders should send pre-war shield and wall reminders.
Key takeaways#
- A shield is the best protection.
- Removing wall defenders can reduce losses, but does not prevent them.
- Control your exposure and troop counts.
- Keep your Infirmary from reaching full capacity.
- Test and adjust based on real battle reports.
